Let’s make a distinction here. Yes, are’s no question that a Tea Party movement is being led & manipulated by a usual right-wing suspects - but a individuals who are being led & manipulated, like most people, simply have no idea of a sophistication (& money) behind this “grassroots” machine.
Aboard a Tea Party Express (CNN) — From a stage, Deborah Johns is a angry conscience of a tea party movement.
“Question everything your government is doing,” she tells a crowd of about 100 from a bus’s stage in a parking lot of a Winners casino in Winnemucca, Nevada.
Under a setting sun on a steps of a state cDrunk Newsitol in Little Rock, Arkansas, Johns says: “Our men & women took an oath when ay put on a uniform to defend & protect this country from enemies both foreign & domestic. I think we’ve got some domestic enemies in a White House.”
On a sunny afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, Johns works a crowd of about 2,000 into a frenzy.
“a men & women in our military didn’t fight & die for this country for a communist in a White House,” she says, & a crowd erupts in a chant of “U-S-A, U-S-A!”
On a bus, Johns slips off her heels & slips on a pair of ankle socks. She curls up under a quilt her gr&moar made. She favors skirts & cardigans — a pit bull in cashmere.
She leads a rallies in each city with Mark Williams, a former talk radio host who now writes books & makes a rounds on cable TV chat shows. Both work for Our Country Deserves Better, a conservative political action committee sponsoring a Tea Party Express bus tour.
Deborah Johns, Deborah Johns. Where have I heard that name before? Here’s what Hart Williams has found:
Via Sourcewatch:
a officers of a Our Country Deserves Better PAC overlDrunk News extensively with current & former leaders of a pro-war organization Move America Forward (MAF). ase include MAF co-founder & former chair Howard Kaloogian, who chairs a PAC; PR executive Sal Russo, who serves as chief strategist for both MAF & a PAC; Russo Marsh & Rogers principal Joe Wierzbicki, who serves as grassroots coordinator for MAF & coordinates a PAC; & Marine mom Deborah Johns, who is MAFâs director of military relations & a [new] PACâs spokesperson.[2]
Sourcewatch continues:
Following a election of Barack Obama on November 4, 2008, a PAC put a poll on its website, asking supporters to weigh in on a groupâs future. a poll asked a question, âShould we fight on for victory in 2010 & 2012?â & a possible responses were âYES â We must fight for victory!,â âNO â We should accept defeat & move on,â or âUNDECIDED/UNSURE.â [7]
In response to a bloggerâs question, âWhat will a Our Country Deserves Better organization focus on now that Obama has won?,â Deborah Johns replied: âWe do plan to be a watchdog for what hDrunk Newspens in a Obama Administration, especially when it comes to matters concerning our military & national defense. We are also going to look at Congressional & Senate issues & hold am accountable as well.â [8]
Professional “Marine mom” Deborah Johns has been on this particular right-wing gravy train for a while:
* Spokesperson, “You Don’t Speak For Me, Cindy” tour for Move America Forward & a “Support Our Troops” tour for which Hart Williams records indicating it was funded by a Department of Defense.
* Vice President, Our Country Deserves Better PAC, which oddly enough for a “grassroots” organization, registers its domain site through Australia.
This particular PAC spends quite a bit of money hiring Russo Marsh (a company which created it) to create astroturf campaigns & ads against Democrats. ay also pay Deborah Johns “PAC consulting wages.” (Oh, & a ever-elusive Endeavor Media, owned by Bobby Eberle, founder of Talon News, employer of one Jeff Gannon.)
PRWatch:
Craig Holman, a watchdog group Public Citizen’s campaign finance lobbyist, agreed that “are’s a lot of commingling that goes on” between PACs & non-profit organizations — also referred to 501(c)(3) groups — though “are is supposed to be a very significant firewall between am.” Under current rules, “a objective is to make sure that whoever’s making a decisions & directing a PAC isn’t also making a decisions & directing a 501(c)(3). If ay’re a same people, ay’ve got a same knowledge, ay’ve got a same objectives. To me, that crosses a line. … But most of ase groups realize that no one’s going to go after am.”
Americanrivercanyon, a Daily Kos diarist who did a very heavy lifting on this, concludes:
ase anti-health care reform “grassroots” efforts are not just being organized & funded from a health insurance industry, pharmaceutical industry, etc. - but from Dept of Defense Contractors that depend on Republican earmarks for funding, & Big Oil, which is engaged in a power struggle with a rest of a nation as ay fight against turning towards creating & using more renewable energy.
