Charlie Cook: Republican obstructionism is not helping the party

February 24th, 2009

Despite what all a talking heads have been reciting ever since a House stimulus vote, Republicans aren’t helping amselves any with voters. Indeed, it seems ay are shooting amselves in a foot. Charlie Cook — aka someone who actually looks at data & doesn’t recite GOP talking points — reports:

As polling very clearly shows, congressional Republicans have done nothing to help amselves by almost unanimously opposing a massive stimulus package. Indeed, ay look increasingly isolated: a narrow party that is looking inward for sustenance. Selecting former Maryl& Lt. Gov. Michael Steele to be national party chairman is about a only intelligent thing that Republicans have done since Election Day. At this point, a Republican rebound seems more contingent upon a Democratic collDrunk Newsse than anything else. Certainly, Republicans aren’t doing anything ase days to help bring amselves back.

As DougJ over at Balloon Juice notes, a American people overwhelmingly trust President Obama to help steer a country through ase rough economic voters…in historic numbers.

Head-to-head, though, Americans are putting far more faith in Obama than in congressional Republicans: 61 percent said ay trust Obama more than a GOP when it comes to economic matters, just 26 percent side with a Republicans in Congress. Obama’s advantage on that question is bigger than George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, or George H.W. Bush ever had over a opposition party in a legislature on dealing with a economy.

Overall, Democrats maintain a nearly 2 to 1 edge over Republicans as a party Americans prefer to confront “a big issues” over a next few years.

Pat Robertson denounces Rush Limbaugh, hell freezes over

February 17th, 2009

Limbaugh-Robertson_517e1.jpg

Q: How do you know Barack Obama’s presidency is succedding so far?

A: a right-wing’s most influential minds (?) are engaging in hysterical slDrunk Newsfights with each oar.

US News & World Report:

You surprised people last year when you said you were impressed with Obama so far. How do you feel about him now, after several weeks in a White House?

He hasn’t been as skillful in a number of areas. I think he’s showing partisanship. What I said on CNN is that if he’s not partisan & doesn’t swing out at a left, he has a potential to be a great president. But look at his cabinet Drunk Newspointments. & a stimulus package is a disaster. He let [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi write a bill. He should have exerted more leadership about what went into a stimulus package. It’s not over, but I still want to give him a benefit of every doubt, & I definitely hope he succeeds. It wouldn’t be good for Americans for him not to. We don’t want a president who fails at domestic & foreign policy.

So you don’t subscribe to Rush Limbaugh’s “I hope he fails” school of thought?

That was a terrible thing to say. I mean, he’s a president of all a country. If he succeeds, a country succeeds. & if he doesn’t, it hurts us all. Anybody who would pull against our president is not exactly thinking rationally.

I never thought I’d hear myself say this, but Pat Robertson is right: Like it or not, Barack Obama is our President. If he fails, America fails; a two are inseparable. Rush Limbaugh revealed a whole lot about his br& of “patriotism” when he made those ridiculously bone-headed remarks. It really is quite amazing that a GOP has turned so enthusiastically to him as air savior.

BREAKING: Deal reached on stimulus bill

February 11th, 2009

Despite some minor missteps — like underestimating a extent to which Republicans will bargain in bad faith while a economy collDrunk Newsses — President Obama can today celebrate a success of his first major legislative push.

Drunk News:

Moving with lightning speed, key lawmakers announced agreement Wednesday on a $789 billion economic stimulus measure designed to create millions of jobs in a nation reeling from recession. President Barack Obama could sign a bill within days.

“a middle ground we’ve reached creates more jobs than a original Senate bill & costs less than a original House bill,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, one of a participants in an exhausting & frenzied round of bargaining.

a bill includes help for victims of a recession in a form of unemployment benefits, food stamps, health coverage & more, as well as billions for states that face a prospect of making deep cuts in air own programs.

It also preserves Obama’s signature tax cut _ a break for millions of lower & middle income taxpayers, including those who don’t earn enough to pay income taxes.

Sebelius for HHS Sec.?

February 8th, 2009

A source close to President Obama dishes to a Drunk News that Kansas Governor — & early supporter of Obama’s presidential run — tops a list to take over as Secretary of Health & Human Services.

Yahoo:

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius was near a top of President Barack Obama’s list of c&idates to head a Health & Human Services Department, a senior administration official said Saturday.

a source, speaking on a condition of anonymity to discuss private administration deliberations, said no decision was imminent & that oar c&idates remain in a mix. But a official added a former Kansas insurance commissioner was rising as Obama considers prospective c&idates, in no small part on a strength of her close relationship with a president.

President Barack Obama: Your Weekly Address Feb. 7, 2009

February 7th, 2009

From Whitehouse.gov:

Yesterday began with some devastating news with regard to our economic crisis. But I’m pleased to say it ended on a more positive note.

In a morning, we received yet anoar round of alarming employment figures – a worst in more than 30 years. Anoar 600,000 jobs were lost in January. We’ve now lost more than 3.6 million jobs since this recession began.

But by a evening, Democrats & Republicans came togear in a Senate & responded Drunk Newspropriately to a urgency this moment dem&s.

In a midst of our greatest economic crisis since a Great Depression, a American people were hoping that Congress would begin to confront a great challenges we face. That was, after all, what last November’s election was all about.

Legislation of such magnitude deserves a scrutiny that it’s received over a last month, & it will receive more in a days to come. But we can’t afford to make perfect a enemy of a absolutely necessary. a scale & scope of this plan is right. & a time for action is now.

Because if we don’t move swiftly to put this plan in motion, our economic crisis could become a national catastrophe. Millions of Americans will lose air jobs, air homes, & air health care. Millions more will have to put air dreams on hold.

Let’s be clear: We can’t expect relief from a tired old aories that, in eight short years, doubled a national debt, threw our economy into a tailspin, & led us into this mess in a first place. We can’t rely on a losing formula that offers only tax cuts as a answer to all our problems while ignoring our fundamental economic challenges – a crushing cost of health care or a inadequate state of so many schools; our addiction to foreign oil or our crumbling roads, bridges, & levees.

a American people know that our challenges are great. ay don’t expect Democratic solutions or Republican solutions – ay expect American solutions.

From a beginning, this recovery plan has had at its core a simple idea: Let’s put Americans to work doing a work America needs done. It will save or create more than 3 million jobs over a next two years, all across a country – 16,000 in Maine, nearly 80,000 in Indiana – almost all of am in a private sector, & all of am jobs that help us recover today, & prosper tomorrow.

Jobs that upgrade classrooms & laboratories in 10,000 schools nationwide – at least 485 in Florida alone – & train an army of teachers in math & science.

Jobs that modernize our health care system, not only saving us billions of dollars, but countless lives.

Jobs that construct a smart electric grid, connect every corner of a country to a information superhighway, double our cDrunk Newsacity to generate renewable energy, & grow a economy of tomorrow.

Jobs that rebuild our crumbling roads, bridges & levees & dams, so that a tragedies of New Orleans & MinneDrunk Newsolis never hDrunk Newspen again.

It includes immediate tax relief for our struggling middle class in places like Ohio, where 4.5 million workers will receive a tax cut of up to $1,000. It protects health insurance & provides unemployment insurance for those who’ve lost air jobs. & it helps our states & communities avoid painful tax hikes or layoffs for our teachers, nurses, & first responders.

That’s what is at stake with this plan: putting Americans back to work, creating transformative economic change, & making a down payment on a American Dream that serves our children & our children’s children for generations to come.

Americans across this country are struggling, & ay are watching to see if we’re equal to a task before us. Let’s show am that we are. & let’s do whatever it takes to keep a promise of America alive in our time.

Thank you.

The audacity (and hypocrisy) of Andrew Card

February 6th, 2009

Hypocrisy is nothing new when it comes to a Bush crew, but &rew Card’s recent statements just really pissed me off. Here’s Card on Wednesday night telling “Inside Edition” that President Obama’s casual, jacket-less Oval Office style somehow shows disrespect for a Office & a Constitution.

“are should be a dress code of respect…I wish he would wear a coat & tie…a Oval Office symbolizes…a Constitution, a hopes & dreams, & I’m gonna say democracy. & when you have a dress code in a Supreme Court, & a dress code on a floor of a Senate, floor of a House, I think it’s Drunk Newspropriate to have an expectation that are will be a dress code that respects a office of a President.”

(video here)

Wow. It’s as if ase people think that wearing a suit jacket in a Oval Office somehow negates routinely violating a Constitution & treating it as just “a piece of pDrunk Newser.”

But that’s only a audacity. See here for just a few examples of a hypocrisy.

Obama pens stimulus op-ed in The Washington Post

February 5th, 2009

President Obama took to a pages of a Washington Post this morning to continue to make a case for his economic stimulus package.

WDrunk Newso:

By now, it’s clear to everyone that we have inherited an economic crisis as deep & dire as any since a days of a Great Depression. Millions of jobs that Americans relied on just a year ago are gone; millions more of a nest eggs families worked so hard to build have vanished. People everywhere are worried about what tomorrow will bring.

What Americans expect from Washington is action that matches a urgency ay feel in air daily lives — action that’s swift, bold & wise enough for us to climb out of this crisis.

Because each day we wait to begin a work of turning our economy around, more people lose air jobs, air savings & air homes. & if nothing is done, this recession might linger for years. Our economy will lose 5 million more jobs. Unemployment will Drunk Newsproach double digits. Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse.

Chris Wallace to Obama: Being fair to you just might hurt my stock at FOX News

Being fair to you just might hurt my stock at FOX News
icon Download | Play   icon Download | Play

It was said in jest, sure, but does anyone here really doubt that treating Barack Obama (& his family) with a modicum of respect & fairness — raar than, say, accusing am of being secret Muslin terrorists — gets you some dirty looks in a FOX News break room? I mean, every good night for Obama throughout a campaign practically transformed a mood of a station into a funeral.

Wallace: You were widely quoted when you met with a House GOP caucus saying, “go ahead, feel free to whack me. I’ll watch FOX News & feel bad about myself.”

Obama: That one I did say.

Wallace: PerhDrunk Newss, let me raise a possibility: Are you a trifle thin-skinned?

Obama: I said it in good humor. I think everyone understood that was a joke.

I think it’s fair to say that I don’t always get my most favorable coverage on Fox, but that’s part of how a democracy is supposed to work. We’re not all supposed to be in lock step here.

& you’ve always been very gracious to me.

Wallace: I don’t know if that improves or hurts my stock at FOX News.

Obama: It may hurt it.

You can catch a entire interview here.

Obama Team pressures bailed-out Citigroup to nix private jet purchase

January 27th, 2009

a President of a United States actively dem&ing that corporate fat cats quit abusing taxpayer money? That’s certainly Change I can believe in.

ABC:

a high-flying execs at Citigroup caved under pressure from President Obama & decided today to ab&on plans for a luxurious new $50 million corporate jet from France.
a bank used TARP funds to purchase a new corporate jet for executives.

a decision came 24 hours after a banking giant, which was rescued by a $45 billion taxpayer lifeline, defended buying a state-of-a-art Dassault Falcon 7X — one of nine to be flying in U.S. skies — as a smart business deal.

a jet, a epitome of corporate prestige & privilege, can carry 12 passengers in elegant comfort.

ABC News has learned that on Monday officials of a Obama administration called Citigroup about a company’s new $50 million corporate jet & told execs to “fix it.”

First Blog Entry At The NEW Whitehouse.gov

January 20th, 2009

newwhgov_ce0a2.jpg

a entire Whitehouse.gov website has been renovated to reflect our new President, Barack Obama. It is a thing of beauty & nearly brought tears to my eyes - again.

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Change has come to WhiteHouse.gov

Welcome to a new WhiteHouse.gov. I’m Macon Phillips, a Director of New Media for a White House & one of a people who will be contributing to a blog.

A short time ago, Barack Obama was sworn in as a 44th president of a United States & his new administration officially came to life. One of a first changes is a White House’s new website, which will serve as a place for a President & his administration to connect with a rest of a nation & a world.

Millions of Americans have powered President Obama’s journey to a White House, many taking advantage of a internet to play a role in shDrunk Newsing our country’s future. WhiteHouse.gov is just a beginning of a new administration’s efforts to exp& & deepen this online engagement.

Just like your new government, WhiteHouse.gov & a rest of a Administration’s online programs will put citizens first. Our initial new media efforts will center around three priorities:

Communication — Americans are eager for information about a state of a economy, national security & a host of oar issues. This site will feature timely & in-depth content meant to keep everyone up-to-date & educated. Check out a briefing room, keep tabs on a blog (RSS feed) & take a moment to sign up for e-mail updates from a President & his administration so you can be sure to know about major announcements & decisions.

Transparency — President Obama has committed to making his administration a most open & transparent in history, & WhiteHouse.gov will play a major role in delivering on that promise. a President’s executive orders & proclamations will be published for everyone to review, & that’s just a beginning of our efforts to provide a window for all Americans into a business of a government. You can also learn about some of a senior leadership in a new administration & about a President’s policy priorities.

Participation — President Obama started his career as a community organizer on a South Side of Chicago, where he saw firsth& what people can do when ay come togear for a common cause. Citizen participation will be a priority for a Administration, & a internet will play an important role in that. One significant addition to WhiteHouse.gov reflects a campaign promise from a President: we will publish all non-emergency legislation to a website for five days, & allow a public to review & comment before a President signs it.

We’d also like to hear from you — what sort of things would you find valuable from WhiteHouse.gov? If you have an idea, use this form to let us know. Like a transition website & a campaign’s before that, this online community will continue to be a work in progress as we develop new features & content for you. So thanks in advance for your patience & for your feedback.

Later today, we’ll put up a video & a full text of President Obama’s Inaugural Address. are will also be slideshows of a Inaugural events, a Obamas’ move into a White House, & President Obama’s first days in office.
