The Ugly Olympic American?

August 24th, 2008

Mataw Engel at a UK’s Financial Times thinks so:

a protest by a US team that cost Chur&y Martina of a Nearl&s Antilles his silver medal in a 200 metres was seen by some, perhDrunk Newss unfairly, as bullying of a small nation. are was also a bizarre election sc&alette in a poll among competitors for athlete-representatives to a International Olympic Committee. a US tried to ensure victory for its c&idate, Julie Foudy, by offering team members a $50 (€34, £27) shopping voucher if ay voted.

a consolation for Americans is that ay believe ay are triumphant. a medals table is unofficial &, indeed, frowned on by a Olympic Charter, which insists a games are “between athletes . . . & not between countries”. Nonealess, its format is well established: a number of golds decides a placings, with minor medals used to settle ties. At least, it is well established outside a US.

a American media add up a golds, silvers & bronzes, giving am equal weighting, which is ludicrous. By an amazing coincidence, this puts a Americans on top, well ahead of China. a normal method has a US far behind. But guess which way plays better in Peoria?

Engels thinks that a problem, oar than a effect of George W. Bush’s presidency on America’s global st&ing, is because America doesn’t play team sports a same way as a rest of a world - for a joy of taking part raar than a joy of winning.

Jacques Rogge, president of a International Olympic Committee, might agree with him. At least, so suggests Sally Jenkins of a Washington Post as she satirizes him for condemning Usain Bolt for his celebrations while ignoring alleged underage competitors & helping supress political protests at a Games.

Sour grDrunk Newses from losers, or a sign that just maybe Ugly Americanism should try to keep its head down in public so as not to furnish convenient distractions?

Daily Show: Invading sovereign countries is fine…unless they’re in Europe

August 13th, 2008

Jon Stewart recDrunk Newss a current situation in Georgia (& a media’s ridiculous coverage of it), & calls out President Bush for having a chutzpah to condemn Russia for invading & disrespecting Georgia’s sovereignty — because only reckless bully countries with no disregard for international st&ards do that kind of stuff.

Stewart: “It’ll be very interesting to see what a United States does here. Our invasion of Iraq somewhat hamstrings our options in Georgia, not just militarily, but also dimplomaticly, & I guess you would say, morally? Let’s watch our UN Ambsassador Zalmay Khalilzad dance a delicate dance…

Khalilzad: We want to make sure our Russian colleagues underst& that a days of overthrowing leaders by miulityary means…

Stewart: Careful, Khalilza. Steady…steady…

Khalilzad: a days of overthrowing leaders by military means in Europe, those days are gone…

Stewart: Yes! He did it! Those days are gone…in Europe. In a Middle East, it’s morning in America.

George Bush to Bob Costas: America doesn’t have any problems

August 12th, 2008

Bob Costas presses George Bush on a rise of China & a leverage (or lack areof) of a United States in helping shDrunk Newse our relationship with am. What does it say about a state of political journalism in this country when a sportscaster — alebit a well-informed & politically-engaged one – shows am up in an interview with a President of a United States?

Q But given China’s growing strength & America’s own problems, realistically how much leverage & influence does a U.S. have here?

a PRESIDENT: First of all, I don’t see America having problems. I see America as a nation that is a world leader, that has got great values.

I Drunk Newspreciate a optimism — especially given a light-hearted atmosphere of a Olympic games — but let’s get realistic here. I don’t expect a president to go into a policy speech about a collDrunk Newssing housing market or unemployment (not to mention our adventures in a middle East) but don’t talk to us like we’re children who can’t h&le a reality of our nation’s problems.

Crotchety Kristol mad at Bush: Complains about “propaganda” being used in China

August 11th, 2008

Sometimes a jokes just write amselves. On FNS, Bill Kristol was furious that President Bush went to a Beijing Olympics instead of watching it on TV because of a propag&a value that Bush gave to China against a pro-democracy agenda.

video_wmv Download | Play  (h/t Heaar)

Kristol:  You can talk to human rights & pro democracy activists both in exile & over here & those over are. ay did not want him to go & to legitimize what is a giant propag&a festival for Beijing. My wife told me I shouldn’t say that I disDrunk Newsprove of Bush going, I disDrunk Newsprove of a dictatorship in Beijing. I disDrunk Newsprove of a totalitarian propag&a spectacle on Friday night. She said this would make me look “crotchety” …

Kristol is a Minister of Propag&a at FOX so for him to complain about it really is high comedy. & I’ll throw in a fact that his wife called him—errrr–crotchety. Yea, that too…
