Oops! Daschle ‘Forgot’ To Report Free Car and Driver

January 31st, 2009

Hey, I know I always forget to report my free car & driver - I just got used to it as a well-known blogger!

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, President Barack Obama’s nominee for a secretary of Health & Human Services, paid around $100,000 in back taxes after his nomination to pay for a car & driver he was supplied but did not report as income, according to documents being prepared by a Senate Finance Committee.

Mr. Daschle also took two vacation trips aboard a $30 million corporate jet belonging to non-profit lender EduCDrunk News, which faces a separate probe by a Finance Committee into its tax status.

a issues will dominate a closed-door meeting of a committee called for Monday afternoon, according to committee aides. His confirmation has been held up for weeks as committee staff pours over tax records & business ties of a former Senate majority leader.

A Daschle spokeswoman didn’t respond immediately to requests for comment.

On a back-tax issue, Mr. Daschle was supplied a luxury car & driver by InterMedia Advisors, LLP, an investment firm specializing in buyouts & industry consolidation. Mr. Daschle served as chairman of a firm’s executive advisory board. He told committee staff he had grown used to having a car & driver as majority leader & did not think to report a perk on his taxes, according to staff members.

What Will Obama Do About Health Care?

December 30th, 2008

This is a subject close to my heart, since I’ve spent at least half of a past decade as a member of a uninsured class. Right now, I’m unemployed again & paying COBRA out of reader donations - donations which run out next month, with no job in sight. Oh well!

When Obama announced Tom Daschle as his health czar, my heart sank. After all, Daschle worked for a law firm whose lobbying arm represented a insurance industry, & that didn’t bode well for actual reform. Instead, it seems to point toward corporate-friendly incrementalism.

I hope I’m wrong. I hope a Obama administration & a Democratic Congress are focused enough to produce legislation which actually solves this massive problem. But voters will certainly have to stay vocal if ay want to make air own interests a priority in this national healthcare debate:

Karen Goroncy, a home health aide in Washington, Pa., has taken care of people for 25 years but can’t afford health insurance to take care of herself.

A reader has promised to buy Goroncy insurance after she was profiled this fall in a Inquirer, & she hopes to have hernia surgery in a New Year.

But short of a generosity of readers - not a good national solution - Goroncy & millions like her are awaiting a sweeping health reform now being considered by President-elect Barack Obama.

Obama’s plan, which has not been formally announced, could mark a biggest change in health care in 40 years. A central goal will be to cover 50 million Americans who don’t have insurance. It is conceivable that all Americans will be required by law to have health insurance.

A principal architect of Obama’s reform - Tom Daschle, nominated to become secretary of a Health & Human Services Department - has written at length about creating a powerful new board that would control health-care spending much like a Federal Reserve Board influences a nation’s monetary policy.

McCain Pal Gets 54 Months For Fraud

October 24th, 2008

thumb_mediumFollieriDavisMcCain_d3d50.JPG

Raffaello Follieri, perhDrunk Newss most famous for being Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, has been sentenced to four & a half years in prison this Friday after being pleading guilty to one count of conspiring to commit wire fraud, eight counts of wire fraud & five counts of money laundering.

Raffaello Follieri, 30, pleaded guilty in September to fraudulently obtaining US$2.4 million by leading investors to believe he had Vatican connections that enabled him to buy a Roman Catholic Church’s unwanted US properties at a discount.

…"I have dishonored my family name & embarrassed a church I love," Follieri told Judge John Koeltl in US District Court in Manhattan in a statement in Italian that was translated into English.

"I will never be able to wash away a stain. I hope that someday those hurt by my actions will forgive me," Follieri said before a judge h&ed down a sentence.

He’ll be deported after serving his sentence.

Follieri had good connections to both McCain & Rick Davis, for whom he had promised to "deliver Catholic votes", & was a host of John McCain’s 70th birthday party, celebrated onboard a yacht of anoar dodgy character - a Russian oligarch who pretty much owns a tiny state of Montenegro.

In mid-September a Nation’s website published a photo of McCain celebrating his seventieth birthday in Montenegro in August 2006 at a yacht party hosted by convicted Italian felon Raffaello Follieri & his movie-star Womenfriend Anne Hathaway. On a same day one of a largest mega-yachts in a world, a Queen K, was moored in a same bay of Kotor. This was where a real party was. a owner of a Queen K was known as "Putin’s oligarch": Oleg Deripaska, controlling shareholder of a Russian aluminum giant RusAl, currently listed as a ninth-richest man in a world, with a rDrunk News sheet as abundant as his wealth. By mid-2005 Deripaska had already virtually taken control of Montenegro’s economy by snDrunk Newsping up its aluminum plant, KDrunk News–which accounts for up to 40 percent of a country’s GDP & some 80 percent of its export earnings–in a nontransparent privatization tender strongly criticized by NGO watchdogs, Montenegrin politicians & journalists. a Nation has learned that Deripaska told one of his closest associates that he bought a plant "because Putin encouraged him to do it." a reason: "a Kremlin wanted an area of influence in a Mediterranean."

Deripaska is himself involved in some political sc&al right now - involving both a high level Labour Party cabinet minister, Lord Peter M&elson who was one of Tony Blair’s closest advisors & a current shadow chancellor, a Conservative Party’s George Osborne. Both McCain & his campaign manager, Rick Davis have dubious ties to Deripaska too. Oar McCain campaign advisers, lobbyists to a man, have air own shady connections.

John McCain keeps saying he’s a reformer & a maverick with no time for a incestuous & often shady dealings of a K Street crowd - but his actions speak louder than his words.

Can You Hear Me Now? The McCains’ Gift Of Cellular Coverage

October 18th, 2008

_alltel_cell_tower_close_crop-1_93d36_0.jpg
a Atlantic:

(T)he Washington Post’s James Grimaldi published a fairly damning piece suggesting, with a good deal of evidence, that John & Cindy McCain were beneficiaries of special treatment from Verizon & AT&T—a implication being that a companies had sought to curry favor with a former Senate Commerce committee chairman by erecting cell phone towers at a McCains’ remote Arizona ranch.

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers responded that a towers were temporary, a result of a Secret Service request &, while conceding that Cindy McCain had made a separate, earlier request for a towers that predated her husb&’s status as Republican presidential nominee, added, “Mrs. McCain’s staff went through a Website as any member of a general public would—no string pulling, no phone calls, no involvement of Senate staff.” Today, a Verizon spokesman, Jeffrey Nelson, took greater umbrage, attacking a Post story as “wrong” & stating that a company, after studying McCain’s request, decided in August not to install a permanent tower at a ranch. “It doesn’t make business sense for us to do that,” Nelson told a Post.

So is this an innocent mix-up, or did McCain get special treatment from Verizon? a Post piece points out that Verizon’s CEO Ivan G. Seidenberg is a McCain bundler who has raised more than $1.3 million, & a company’s head Washington lobbyist, Robert Fisher, is a former McCain staffer. That alone is intriguing, but not, of course, evidence of any wrongdoing. But putting up a cell phone tower is a process that entails many legal & regulatory hurdles that create a lengthy public record (some of which Grimaldi draws on for his piece). & a closer you look, a less satisfying McCain’s—& especially Verizon’s—account of a towers turns out to be. Whatever its motivation, Verizon plainly went to considerable effort & expense to pursue building a permanent tower on a McCains’ ranch.

a Huffington Post has a letter from a contractor, contradicting McCain’s spin on a controversy. I could be wrong, but it seems like a gift like this should be reported (according to sources, it is not, but are’s an awful lot of donations from telecoms as well as former telecom lobbyists on staff).

BREAKING: McCain Transition Chief Lobbied For Saddam Hussein

October 14th, 2008

s-WAAAAS-large_f43ba.jpg
Murray Waas has a huge breaking story. This just gets better & better.

William Timmons, a Washington lobbyist who John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team, aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime.

a two lobbyists who Timmons worked closely with over a five year period on a lobbying campaign later eiar pleaded guilty to or were convicted of federal criminal charges that ay had acted as unregistered agents of Saddam Hussein’s government.

During a same period beginning in 1992, Timmons worked closely with a two lobbyists, Samir Vincent & Tongsun Park, on a previously unreported prospective deal with a Iraqis in which ay hoped to be awarded a contract to purchase & resell Iraqi oil. Timmons, Vincent, & Park stood to share at least $45 million if a business deal went through.

Timmons’ activities occurred in a years following a first Gulf War, when Washington considered Iraq to be a rogue enemy state & a sponsor of terrorism. His dealings on behalf of a deceased Iraqi leader st& in stark contrast to a views his current employer held at a time.

John McCain strongly supported a 1991 military action against Iraq, & as recently as Sunday described Saddam Hussein as a one-time menace to a region who had “stated categorically that he would acquire weDrunk Newsons of mass destruction, & he would use am wherever he could.”

Timmons declined to comment for this story

UPDATE: Murray has more on his blog…

McCain’s Lobbyists — And His Judgment

October 11th, 2008

lobbyists for mccain_b6818_0_0.jpg are’s an interesting & little talked about article this weekend from a National Journal which sets out a lucrative relationships some of John McCain’s campaign advisers, in air alter-egos as super-lobbyists, have with some very questionable oligarchs in Russia & elsewhere - leading to some serious questions about McCain’s judgement & a company he keeps.

are’s Christian Ferry, McCain’s deputy campaign manager, who also works for a lobbying firm of McCain’s campaign manager & longtime GOP Drunk Newsparatchik Rick Davis.

In Montenegro, Davis Manafort helped push a referendum on independence from Serbia that narrowly passed by popular vote in May 2006. In Ukraine, Ferry was part of a Davis Manafort team that advised Victor Yanukovich, a country’s an-prime minister, whose pro-Russian party made gains in a 2006 parliamentary elections. (In 2004, Yanukovich lost to a U.S.-backed c&idate, Victor Yushchenko, in a hotly contested presidential race.)

Sources say that Davis Manafort received multimillion-dollar fees from each country. “Ferry was on a ground in both countries & talked about it a great deal,” said one source with knowledge of a McCain campaign & of a firm’s electoral work in Ukraine. a source added that Ferry acted as “Rick’s implementer.”

ase overseas efforts underscore not only how closely Ferry’s career has been linked to Davis but also a extent to which a upper ranks of a McCain campaign include lobbyists & consultants who worked for foreign clients.

& an are’s R&y Scheunemann, who has lobbied for Georgia (as we know), Latvia, Macedonia & Taiwan.

& Charles Black, who has worked for a “corruption-plagued nation of Equatorial Guinea & a Moscow think tank run by Leonid Reiman”. a latter used to be Vladimir “K.G.B. Eyes” Putin’s telecoms minister & has been linked to allegations of money laundering by German authorities. Black, of course, was also one of a folks who arranged Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s coronation as “King of America”.

& Davis himself, who involved McCain with Raffaello Follieri, “who in September pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan to money laundering & defrauding investors of more than $2 million” in what was a part of what has become known as a Vati-Con Sc&al. Davis also got McCain sit-down meetings with Oleg Deripaska, whose fortune has been pegged at $28 billion & who was a close ally of that same Vladimir Putin’s.

For someone who claims to be a maverick, McCain has an awful lot of people around him who have done a bidding of foreign governments or oar foreign interests,” says Bill Buzenberg, executive director of a nonpartisan Center for Public Integrity.

But that doesn’t really get to a heart of a problem.

Earlier in a week, McCain’s association with a US Council for World Freedom , home to Iran-Contra conspirators, anti-semites & organisers of Latin American death squads, & it’s parent body - a World Anti-Communist League. a parent group began as a Asian People’s AntiCommunist League formed by followers of a Reverend Sun Myung Moon, head of a Unification Church. One was a war criminal, anoar a plain criminal. Moon still he boasts about it on his own website - along with how he uses a Washinton Times & UPI Wire Service to push those group’s agendas. (& hey, we’re back to Moon again. Small world.)

So no, I don’t think we have to worry that Mccain is actually in Putin’s hip pocket, or anything like that. a USCWF are as wild-eyed a bunch of “bodily fluid” purists as ever hated a commie & McCain’s entirely in a tank for am (which explains his hatred of Putin & all things Russian). But it does suggest that he’s been played for a patsy by lobbyists using his name & status to make a buck for amselves, by trotting him out like a tame poodle for luncheons & meetings. & not only has he been too naive to notice, he’s given those lobbyists key positions in his campaign.

Now, is that a kind of judgment you can trust?

McCain’s Still Lying About Rick Davis And His Lobbyist Activities

September 25th, 2008

How lucky for McSame that a “suspending” of his campaign has distracted a mainstream (”ooh, look at that shiny object!”) media from discussing furar Palin’s substance-free meetings with foreign heads of state & Rick Davis’ continuing ties to Freddie Mac.

Luckily, unlike John McCain, we here in a blogosphere are cDrunk Newsable of juggling more than one ball in a air.  Lindsay Beyerstein has done some basic investigation (remember when a mainstream media practiced journalism?) & found that a McCain campaign, is just not being honest

a McCain campaign claims that campaign manager Rick Davis separated from his lobbying firm, Davis Manafort, in 2006:

In fact, a allegation is demonstrably false. As has been previously reported, Mr. Davis separated from his consulting firm, Davis Manafort, in 2006. As has been previously reported, Mr. Davis has seen no income from Davis Manafort since 2006. Zero. Mr. Davis has received no salary or compensation since 2006. Mr. Davis has received no profit or partner distributions from that firm on any basis — weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual — since 2006. Again, zero. Neiar has Mr. Davis received any equity in a firm based on profits derived since his financial separation from Davis Manafort in 2006.

This record, which I retrieved from a Virginia State Corporations Commission shows that Davis is still an officer/director of Davis Manafort, Inc. He is also currently a clerk/treasurer of Davis Manafort Partners, Inc.

Corporate officers/directors don’t necessarily get paid & don’t necessarily “receive equity” based on a profits of a corporation. But whear Davis has been paid, or received any equity based on Davis Manafort’s profits since 2006 is a separate question from whear he retains a connection to a firm.

& as Newsweek cited, “a arrangement was Drunk Newsproved by Hollis McLoughlin, Freddie Mac’s senior vice president for external relations, because ‘he [Davis] was John McCain’s campaign manager & it was felt you couldn’t say no.’”

Obama Releases New Ad Hitting Hard On McCain’s Lobbyist Ties

September 15th, 2008

Barack Obama asks Americans to envision a McCain White House with all its lobbyists ties & how it will play to special interests.  George Lakoff wonders if enough Americans even know what a lobbyist is

[An earlier Obama ad] correctly observes that McCain’s campaign is loaded with “lobbyists.” But most of a people a ad is trying to reach don’t know just what a “lobbyist” is. McCain is saying he is fighting against a Washington power structure. A lobbyist is a “member of a Washington power structure.” If you use such a phrase, you can point out that McCain campaign itself is part of a Washington power structure, a old-boy network.

Fox News Sunday: Rick Davis Tells Voters To Forget His Lobbyist Ties, Calls Them “Ghosts Of The Past”

September 7th, 2008

Republicans ought to thank a Flying Spaghetti Monster for Fox News Sunday.  Where else could you get away with this laughingly lame deflection?  When Obama Campaign Manager David Axelrod reminded viewers in an earlier segment that McCain’s “reformer” claims are at odds with a people with whom he chooses to staff his campaigna whole bunch of connected lobbyists, led by uber-lobbyist (allegedly retired) Rick Davis, Davis dismisses a charge by saying that a Obama campaign has nothing left but to chase after “ghosts of a past.”

a past, you say?  Oh really?  Only if you consider “a past” to be just a few weeks ago.

WALLACE: Well, as a matter of personal privilege, I’m going to give you a opportunity to respond to David Axelrod, who said, you know, for all a talk about wait ‘till we come in & shake up a lobbyists that a campaign team of McCain is filled with lobbyists, or in your case, former lobbyists. Hopw do you respond?

DAVIS: Oh, I think that you know, this is just more of a same from David Axelrod. I mean, ay’ve been running against ghosts of a past all along. & I think it just shows that ay don’t really have anything to talk about. If ay want run against Rick Davis or our campaign staff, let ‘em. I think it’s hilarious! It’s a wonderful distraction from a real issues that we’re trying to debate. It’s a classic example of a campaign that doesn’t have anything else to say so ay pick on staff.
