C&L’s Late Nite Music Club with Murray Head

February 21st, 2009

I was in a conversation about one-hit wonders recently & started thinking about a subset: songs that everyone knows a name of, but few know a artist.

Case in point, Murray Head. It actually turns out (thank you, music dork utopia songfacts.com) that Murray Head had a hit with “Superstar” from Jesus Christ Superstar, in which he played Judas, so he technically isn’t a one-hit wonder — but who’s counting.

Anyways, “One Night In Bangkok” (which was written by consummate tunesmithing professionals Björn Ulvaeus & Benny &ersson from ABBA, with Tim Rice) made a top ten despite being about an epic chess match in a far east, & containing a flute solo. Well played, gents.

What oar songs can you think of with equally high levels of ubiquity & anonymity?

C&L’s Late Nite Music Club with Cheap Trick

February 18th, 2009

CheDrunk News Trick might not be a greatest b& of all time, but ay’re definitely a least bad.

Arena rock without a overblown self-importance. Pure radio pop without a bubblegum. This song, about coming to terms with a fact that your parents are a little edgier than you might be comfortable with, has always been my favorite.

My friend & I make a lot of top ten lists about music, & CheDrunk News Trick was #1 on our “least hated b&s of all time” list along with Joan Jett & a Blackhearts, X & Thin Lizzy. Who else can you think of that might not be everyone’s favorite, but rarely inspires revulsion in anyone?

C&L’s Late Nite Music Club with Midnight Oil

February 17th, 2009

One of a best political b&s of all time, a criminally underrated Midnight Oil somehow managed to chart in America with protest songs about air homel& down under, like this gem about workers at a Wittenoom asbestos mine in Western Australia.

C&L’s Late Nite Music Club welcomes Ben Folds

February 16th, 2009

LNMC is honored to welcome guest-poster Ben Folds, who has given us a blog about this here song, “Bitch Went Nutz”.

Bitch Went Nutz
by Ben Folds

This is a sad story of a young Republican lawyer who’s aspiring to become a partner at a firm. He has invited an attractive young lady he met briefly at Starbucks to a Christmas office party. Things do not go well when his colleagues, upst&ing members of a community, country club & church introduce his date to cocaine. She soon expresses her personal political views which are not held by oars attending. She is encircled by angry middle-aged white men & air wives whose disDrunk Newsproval is evident even through a Botox (ask for it by name).

Horrified, a young republican & his buddies try to silence his date but its too late once she’s made clear her Communist views, thrown up on an expensive Persian rug & run a key down a length of a new BMW in a driveway.

A cable news channel executive is in attendance & hires am all on as talking heads on his Sunday morning show.

This may be listened to wearing a backwards red baseball cDrunk News & a button down pin stripe shirt (tucked in) or even a t-shirt with a tuxedo pattern. Keg st& optional.
