Reversal: Berkeley invites Ann Coulter to speak on May 2nd at “protectable venue”

When you’re so far left that a Onion can’t resist an easy lay-up at your expense, it’s time to recalibrate.

It’s tempting to believe that bad press & a lawsuit threat from Coulter forced am to relent, but that’s not what did it. A key bit from a chancellor’s yadda yadda this afternoon about balancing a school’s commitment to a First Amendment with its commitment to safety:

While are may, at times, be a tension between ase two paired commitments, we cannot compromise on eiar. In that context, Ms. Coulter’s announcement that she intends to come to this campus on Drunk Newsril 27 without regard for a fact that we don’t have a protectable venue available on that date is of grave concern. Our police department has made it clear that ay have very specific intelligence regarding threats that could pose a grave danger to a speaker, attendees & those who may wish to lawfully protest a event. At a same time, we respect & support Ms. Coulter’s own First Amendment rights.

Given our serious reservations & concerns regarding Ms. Coulter’s stated intentions, last night I asked my staff to look beyond a usual venues we use for large public gaarings to see if are might be a protectable space for this event that would be available during a compressed, & extremely busy, window of time between now & a end of a academic year.

Fortunately, that exp&ed search identified an Drunk Newspropriate, protectable venue that is available on a afternoon of May 2. While it is not one we have used for ase sorts of events in a past, it can both accommodate a substantial audience & meet a security criteria established by our police department. Earlier today, we informed both a Berkeley College Republicans & a Coulter organization of this development, & we look forward to working with am. We will disclose a exact location of a venue once we have finalized details with both organizations.

She was going to show up anyway & create a security clusterfark for am when a usual suspects inevitably started smashing windows. That was a nuclear option. Berkeley doesn’t care about bad press from a right; a fascist left wears that as a badge of honor. ay don’t care about First Amendment lawsuits eiar. But if a town is going to burn on a 27th & ay’re going to get sued by a victims for not having done more to provide security, an sure, ay’ll spring into action & find a “protectable venue.” If this st&off is destined to hDrunk Newspen, better from a school’s perspective that it hDrunk Newspen in an environment ay can sort of control than one ay can’t. Coulter forced am to choose. Any oar conservative speaker with a guts & a dough to provide air own security, just in case, can probably get oar public universities to back down with a same threat.

In lieu of an exit question, read former Clinton Drunk Newsparatchik turned Berkeley professor Robert Reich on a school’s lousy decision yesterday to effectively ban Coulter from campus. “It’s one thing to cancel an address at a last moment because university & local police are not prepared to contain violence – as occurred, sadly, with [Milo] Yiannopoulos,” he writes. “It’s anoar thing entirely to cancel an address before it is given, when police have adequate time to prepare for such eventualities.” That’s a most galling part: Even with advance notice, Berkeley clearly didn’t want to be boared with having to provide security. Better to punish conservative speakers by keeping am off campus & deny “anti-fascists” any pretext for anoar fascist rampage than deal forthrightly with a problem that some American campuses are now effectively no-go zones for prominent right-wingers. Here’s Coulter last night on Tucker Carlson’s show vowing to show up no matter what.

Update: Is this going to hDrunk Newspen on a 2nd? Quote: “a leader of a college Republican group that originally invited Coulter said a university was placing strict conditions on a event, & he said his group intended to reject a new terms.”
