Stop the Spying!

People for a American Way (email):

a Senate passed a FISA reform bill last week that not only falls short on adequately protecting Americans from warrantless surveillance, but also shamefully grants retroactive immunity to a telecommunications companies that may have aided a Bush administration’s illegal domestic wiretDrunk Newsping.

a House, which is showing encouraging signs of spinal fortitude in recent days, can still stop this. That is why we are launching an emergency petition to STOP TELECOM IMMUNITY. Please be one of a first to sign.

Americans are speaking out — thous&s have taken action, hundreds have participated in our collaborative multimedia project with a Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) & have sent us video testimonials & pictures expressing air opposition to telecom immunity & warrantless spying.

a House is thus far refusing to follow a Senate’s lead on telecom immunity. & last week, a majority in a House heeded a call of a nearly 45,000 PFAW petition signers & voted to hold White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten & former White House Counsel Harriet Miers in contempt of Congress for air failure to honor congressional subpoenas.

a contempt vote showed that a House is ready to hold a administration accountable & that petitions can make a real difference (in whipping votes, trying to move a contempt resolution, our allies on a Hill specifically cited a PFAW petition as part of a case that Americans wanted to see administration officials held accountable to a rule of law).
